Urinary Tract & Bladder Infections

Women are more suspectible to urinary tract and bladder infections when they are pregnant due to one of the physiological changes in the body that pregnancy brings about.

Kidneys increase in length and there is an increase in urinary stasis which can increase risk of infection and make renal function tests difficult to interpret.

If you are pregnant with an urinary tract or bladder infection and have been told that your right ureter is dilated and that there are concerns your ureter tube is blocked, know this. There is a NORMAL physiological change in the body due to pregnancy that makes the right ureter more dilated than the left one.

Signs of a possible urinary tract or bladder infection are;

Preventing Urinary Tract Infections

Eat a healthy diet. Eliminate processed foods, white flour products, sugar, caffeine and fast foods from your diet.

Eat prebiotic and fermented foods. Establishing a healthy intestinal bacteria population will protect against infection.

Drink lots of water - at least 8 glasses a day.

Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice is useful as well. If you hate cranberry, try grapefruit juice.

Pee when you need to, don't hold it in, and when going to the toilet wipe from front to back after bowel movements.

Urinate after intercourse as this helps flush away any bacteria.

Use 100% cotton underwear so your skin can breath and your crotch area is kept dry.

Avoid chemicals, perfumes, scents, soaps etc in baths and in toilet paper as they can irritate the vagina.

Take 1000-2000mg of Vitamin C with bioflavoniods daily. Best acquired fresh through your diet rather than a supplement. If you must supplement, use Vitamin C in the form of calcium asorbate.

Eat diuretic foods such as watermelon, celery and parsley to help flush out your system.

Drinking Nettle tea daily during your pregnancy will help strengthen your kidneys.

Coping With Urinary Tract Infections

Increase Vitamin C intake.

Take a probiotic supplement or increase fermented foods eaten such as home made unsweetened yogurt (not Easyio!!) or kefir with added probiotic powders.

Take Grapefruit seed extract 6-8 drops, 3 times a day in a glass of water or juice. (Unsweetened juice is best)

Urinary Tract Herbal Remedy

Uva Ursi infused with boiling water for 8 hours and drinking a cup of this every 12 hours will effectively deal with an urinary tract or bladder infection - even ones resistant to antibiotics.

If the infection is severe, take a cup every 4 hours. After the symptoms disappear, take one cup a day for 3 days. Do not take this infusion for more than 10 days in a row.

If Uva Ursi alone doesn't work, add yarrow infusion to the uva ursi infusion that you are drinking. (half and half)
