Thrush / Candida

The candida yeast is a part of our body's normal gut flora and is not a problem until it gets out of control. Thrush can occur on the nipples, in your mouth or your baby's, in the vagina or in skin folds and rashes on the skin.

Pregnant women, mothers, and babies are at higher risk of thrush if they are taking antibiotics.

If your baby seems hungry but is fussing at the breast, check the insides of your baby's cheeks and their throat. Look for white patches or redness.

Preventing Thrush

Eat prebiotic and fermented probiotic foods. If you feel it is neccessary, take a probiotic supplement.

Avoid antibiotics. There are ways to clear up bacterial infections without antibiotics, and if you must take antibiotics make sure it is one specifically for the offending bacteria. Take probiotic supplements too and keep doing so for a month after you stop antibiotics.

Avoid sugar, white flour products, processed foods and caffeine.

Coping with Thrush

Take probiotic supplements, eat probiotic and prebiotic foods. This is the best thing you can do to get thrush under control.

You can also do Grapefruit seed extract washes - 5 drops to half a cup of water, and wash down the affected areas with a cotton wool ball regularly and daily.

Bath with vinegar.

Use bicarbonate soda in some water and wipe down the affected areas.

Take good care with hygiene to prevent the thrush spreading.

Avoid sugar, white flour products, processed foods and caffeine.
