Morning Sickness

Morning sickness usually starts at around 4 weeks and resolves by the 12th week of pregnancy. However, some women will experience it for longer, or on and off throughout pregnancy. Contrary to the name given, morning sickness does NOT just occur in the morning!

It's also worth bearing in mind that menopause, PMT/PMS and morning sickness are experienced very differently in many cultures. Why?

Coping with Morning Sickness

Avoid drugs for morning sickness (most will contain anti-histamines which cause birth defects in animal studies), and other chemical drugs. They can be highly dangerous with risks and side effects not known to the prescriber. The damage done by thalidomide, a morning sickness drug, was horrendous and it was not til after the fact that it was discovered that it was not safe for use in pregnancy.

Take time to examine any sources of tension or stresses you may have. Sometimes those can trigger nausea. Also it pays to listen to the signals from your body. Extremes can cause nausea - overeating, undereating, being too cold, being too hot, being too tired etc. If there is something your body needs, try and give it what it needs before things get out of hand.

Eat frequent, small meals as there is a strong connection between nausea and low blood sugar.

Eat a protein rich snack right before bed for slow releasing energy throughout the sleeping period. Have small snacks available in small containers for throughout the night should you awaken hungry.

Increase iron and the B vitamins you receive through your diet (rather than supplement as too much of those can cause problems).

Drink fennel seed, peppermint or spearmint infusion in the morning.

Drink raspberry leaf infusion each day. You can also make ice cubes from it.

Use sea-sickness / motion sickness acupressure bands on your wrists.

See an acupuncturist.

Get fresh air away from artificial lighting and fumes/pollution.

Take a tablespoon of ginger root infusion every time you start to feel nauseous or queasy.

If the morning sickness is severe enough for you to start considering chemical drugs, consider trying wild yam root infusion or doses of wild yam decoction or tincture. A naturopath can make up some for you.

Ipeac 30x, Nux vomica 6x, Cannabis 30x in homeopathic pellets may help. Do a search for those or see a homeopath to match a remedy to your symptoms, emotions and situation.
