Constipation

A physiological change in a pregnant woman's body can cause constipation by slowing the action of the intestinal tract down to absorb as much nutrients as possible from food.

Other causes of constipation include emotional stress, dietary changes, sleep pattern changes and taking prenatal supplements that contain iron. Do not take ferrous sulphate iron supplements.

Avoiding Constipation

Eat whole foods - whole grains, vegetables, fruit, etc.

Avoid processed & refined foods and white flour products.

Drink plenty of water and liquids in between meals.

Eat less red meat, and try to minimise or avoid processed meats that contain additives like smoked or cured meat.

Exercise.

Get into the routine of drinking a hot cup of herbal tea each morning on an empty stomach before having breakfast. Bowel movements usually follow within an hour after your breakfast.

Coping with Constipation

Drink prune or pear juice to help soften your stools.

Figs, prunes, rhubarb and maple syrup also loosen the bowels.

Eat fresh greens for their laxative and mineral content - violet leaves, dandelion, amaranth are good ones for constipation.
