Afterpains

Afterpains are beneficial. They reduce bleeding, help expel the contents of your uterus and bring it back to its pre-pregnancy shape and size.

That said, afterpains can be a bugger, especially when breastfeeding in the days after birth. Women often find them to be more painful than the birth itself.

What to Do

Breastfeed often. It may hurt like bugger all and increase the intensity of the afterpains, but breastfeeding DOES decrease the duration of the afterpains.

Get lots of rest, fluids and pee lots!

Liferoot tincture if taken 5 drops a day in water for two weeks preceeding a period can relieve bad menstruation pains. Likewise, if taken for 2-4 weeks preceeding birth, it can lessen or prevent afterpains.

Drinking Ground Ivy Leaf infusion and Catnip Leaf infusion eases afterpains, promoting uterine tone and keeps the blood flow moving out while relieving pain.

Motherwort herb tincture - depending on the woman 5-20 drops is needed to prove effective.

Afterpain Brew

Susan Weed, the author of "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year" suggests this afterpain brew;

1 ounce dried Cramp Bark or Black Haw Root
1/2 ounce dried Blue Cohosh root
1/4 ounce dried Hops flowers

Infuse herbs in one quart jar filled with boiling water and seal well. After eight hours, strain out herbs and refridgerate liquid.
