Unassisted Birth: Quotes from Aussie UC'ers!
"A
bonding took place between Colita and I during the birth. We have
fallen deeper into each other, our love is more trusting and warmer.
We both feel quietly empowered from our hearts. Our house is lighter
and our lives are subtly changed. It all seems so natural, normal
and ordinary to birth this way."
Rob, husband to Colita who had a planned
unassisted birth due to living 45 minutes away from Melbourne
in a rural area and because of a conference they attended that
showed them that freebirth was an option. The
full story is here.
"My
daughter arrived like clockwork, it was so natural, and there
wasn't an oxygen bottle in sight. I think fear is why a lot of
births don't go well and there was none of that,"
Danielle Wilson of Mission Beach, FNQ -
planned UC due to lack of independant homebirth midwives in the
area and steadfast refusal to go to hospital.
"Both
births were beautiful, intimate times which I will treasure
forever. It was wonderful to have just Dan and Finn alongside
me and to welcome our baby into the world with no fuss - just
love."
Melinda - unplanned unassisted births
(midwife did not turn up in time for two of her births).
"My Max was born today in an unplanned unassisted homewaterbirth,
and I feel AWESOME!"
Chrisom on the 1st of Feb, 2005.
"How i would describe it?? Really, really normal. Ithink
creating life is always a miracle but two people working to
birth their child just sort of seems part of being alive to
me, its one of the things we are here to do. I felt like an
animal, part of life."
Sarah from Lowlands, WA who had 2 planned
unassisted births for her first and second children.
"For me it was true intimacy. I birthed my son in the
love and comfort of home, with only my partner present. My sacred
space - my sanctuary during labour - was not interrupted, and
I didn't feel as though I had to 'perform'. The room was dark
and warm, we were close and smoochie dancing. Our voices mingled
as we sang. I was supported both by the sound of Andys
song and by the strength of his loving arms. In this love, Dexter
was born."
Anna Foley, of inner city Brisbane, a
musical instrument repairer/sales consultant had a freebirth
that was not planned, but rather, 'prepared' for with a midwife
supportive of the possibility of birthing alone, for prenatal
care.
Anna had more to add: I just showed your webpage to my
partner who commented about the quotes: " Every one I read
I nod "yes, yes, yes, yes, yes" " Followed by
" If only women would read this stuff "
"I'm doing UP/UC. I no longer trust medpros, and I trust
my body to grow and birth my baby. My life is too stressful,
but I can say that this is the most relaxed pg I've ever had.
:)"
Jennifer Bax
"These reflections are just a hint of what our second
son's "unplanned" unassisted birth meant to me-it
remains the most exciting day of mine and my husband's lives! Fast. Intense. Powerful. Exhilirating. Funny.
Joyous! Natural. Empowering. Strong. Loud. Commanding. Demanding.
Unstoppable. Unbelievable. Blissful. Beautiful. Simple. Deep down I knew Max was going to be born freely at home (and
at least two of the Birth Centre midwives also had a strong
inkling), but I never admitted it out loud before his birth,
because I knew my partner would completely freak out-the idea
frightened him. He was lucky enough to catch his own baby, though,
a totally empowering few moments, and a turning point for him.
As always, I believe that pregnancy and birth are the most natural
and beautiful events, and that each pregnancy, birth and baby
brings new lessons for us to live by."
Mandy, Brisbane. "Unplanned"
freebirth. Mother to three.
"What a baby! What a night!" This line came into
my head on the night my daughter was born and still sums up
her incredible birth at 11:50pm 4th July!"
"BLUE" of NSW had a planned
unassisted birth!
"For myself watching my sister birth without and time restrictions, intervention and in a totally safe and familar environment just felt natural and right." Jen of Brisbane, QLD who was present at her sister's unplanned, unassisted birth!
"When I reflect on Sarah's birth, so many different emotions
come flooding back. It was the most amazing 10 minutes I have
ever experienced! I've been asked if I would do it again, but
plan it. I don't know. I do know that my UC has reaffirmed my
belief that babies can be born safely outside of a hospital
environment."
Kelly of Bundaberg, QLD had an unplanned
freebirth (August 2004). Her dad and husband were lucky to be
present in time for this fast birth at 36 weeks gestation!
"The whole experience, while being a very special day for our family, seemed so normal. No panic or chaos and certainly nothing medical about it. I didn't have to bother keeping in phone contact to update a midwife of my progress or be distracted by a midwife arriving and setting up. I simply stayed put in the comfort of my own home and did as I pleased. The entire labour was beautifully serene. It seemed like such a dignified way to come into the world." Sam lives in Sydney and planned to have her third baby at home unassisted.
