Queensland Birth Registration
Birth registration is compulsory and parents need to register their child's birth within 60 days of birth. A birth certificate can be obtained after the birth has been registered and both processes can be done at the same time.
Birth registeration and certificates are handled by the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Visit the site for further information and contacts.
To Register:
Fill out and lodge a birth registration form with either the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages or with your local Magistrates Court Office. Birth registration forms can be obtained from hospitals, birth centres, most Magistrates Courts, and from the Registry.
There is no fee required for registering a birth.
To Obtain a Birth Certificate:
Fill out the birth certificate application. You can usually get them at the same time/place as the birth registration form, plus this application is also available online in pdf format. You can get it here: Application for full certificate or extract
Commemorative birth certificates are also available, and can be purchased with the birth certificate by ticking the desired commemorative certificate type on the birth certificate application. View samples of commemorative certificates
There are fees required for obtaining birth certificates. A full certificate or extract as of January 2005 is $24.50 GST exempt. Commemorative certificates are $40.50 GST exempt and this includes a standard full birth certificate copy as well.
Identification is also required in obtaining a birth certificate. You have to provide a photocopy of either a current Photo Australian Driver's license or a photocopy of a current Photo Australian Passport with your application.
If you do not have either, you will need to provide a photocopy of two of the following identification documents; Current Medicare Card, Current credit card, keycard, passport or account statement, current student identity card or statement of enrolment, school or another educational report that is less than 12 months old, over 18's identity card or current entitlement card issued by the Federal Government.
More information on required identification can be found on the birth certificate application.
